Standpipes
- Rigid water piping which is built into multi-story buildings in a vertical position, to which fire hoses can be connected, allowing manual application of water to the fire.
- Standpipes go in a direct up and down direction rather than looping around the stairwell, greatly reducing the length and thus the loss of water pressure due to friction loss.
- Standpipes are rigid and do not kink, a dangerous problem which can occur when a firehose is improperly laid on a stairwell
Key & Bar
- Used to turn on a hydrant water supply, the key and bar assembly fits the standard outlet size for underground valves.
- The bar is slotted at one end to be used to prise open the hydrant cover and fits inside the bar section when not in use.
Dry Risers
- Main vertical pipe intended to distribute water to multiple levels of a building or structure.
- Dry risers have to have fire engine access within 18m of the dry riser inlet box.
